Panel Upgrades and Service Replacements in Odenton

Older panels can struggle with today’s appliances, AC units and electronics. Call us if you notice:

  • Breakers that trip often or won’t reset
  • A panel with no open spaces for new circuits
  • Buzzing, warmth or a burning smell near the panel

On a recent Odenton job, we replaced the home’s entire main electrical service. That included a new panel and breakers, an exterior emergency disconnect, surge protection, a new service cable, and updated grounding and bonding. We also added a new AC circuit with a disconnect and a new kitchen countertop circuit to stop breakers from tripping. As always, we pulled the permits, scheduled the inspections, and coordinated the tie-in with BGE.

Electrical Troubleshooting When You Lose Power

Hidden wiring problems are some of the most common calls for electrical services in Odenton, MD. Recent repairs in town include:

  • A kitchen and dining room that lost power with no tripped breaker. We found a failed connection inside a junction box buried under insulation in the crawlspace.
  • A bedroom outlet that suddenly went dead. It had been wired backward at a junction point, and we corrected the whole circuit.
  • A breaker that tripped while vacuuming and wouldn’t reset. The cause was melted wires on an outlet in another room.

If you smell burning, see sparks or lose power to part of your home, call us. We offer emergency electrical service 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Dedicated Circuits for Kitchens, Pools and Hot Tubs

Big equipment needs its own circuit to run safely. In Odenton, we’ve recently:

  • Wired a new pool with a 95-foot conduit run and a 50-amp feeder powering the pump, gas heater, three lights and a service outlet
  • Quoted eight new circuits for a basement kitchenette, including the permit and inspections
  • Tested a dedicated hot tub circuit from end to end. The wiring checked out, so we gave the homeowner an honest answer: the problem was in the hot tub itself.

Outlets, Switches and Smart Home Upgrades

Need more power where you live and work? We recently added three new outlets to an Odenton bedroom and finished the work the same day. We’ve also rewired a switch bank with four three-way switches and one four-way switch.

Near Piney Orchard, a homeowner’s new video doorbell and smart lock kept losing power. The cause was a 1990s doorbell transformer. We replaced it with a higher-output model, and both devices worked right away. Learn more about our smart home installation services.

Pre-Sale Repairs and Safety Inspections

Selling your Odenton home? We’ve helped sellers fix inspection items the same day, including double-tapped breakers, missing GFCI outlets, loose disposal wiring and a missing smoke detector.

Our electrical safety inspections also catch code issues before they become problems, like multiwire circuits on the wrong type of breaker. Some older homes in the area have aluminum branch wiring. Our aluminum wiring restoration service uses connectors made for aluminum-to-copper connections to reduce fire risk.

Odenton Electrical FAQs

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Odenton?

Most bigger jobs do, like panel upgrades, service replacements, new circuits and pool wiring. Odenton is in Anne Arundel County, so permits go through the county. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection for you.

I’m moving to the Fort Meade area and buying a home in Odenton. What should I have an electrician check?

Before closing, it’s smart to have the panel, breakers, GFCI outlets and smoke detectors looked at. Our electrical safety inspection covers all of that and gives you a clear list of anything that needs attention, so there are no surprises after you move in.

I tried a DIY electrical fix and something went wrong. Can you help?

Yes, and it happens more than you’d think. We’ve helped Odenton homeowners after a switch replacement caused a spark and after outlets stopped working. Turn off the breaker for that area if you can do it safely, then give us a call. We’ll make it safe and wire it correctly.

My new video doorbell or smart lock keeps losing power. Is it the device or my wiring?

Often it’s the doorbell transformer. Many older homes have transformers that can’t power today’s smart devices. We recently fixed this exact problem near Piney Orchard by installing a higher-output transformer, and both devices worked right away.

My hot tub keeps shutting off. Is it the electrical?

Sometimes, but not always. We test the dedicated circuit from the panel to the disconnect to the tub. If the wiring checks out, we’ll tell you honestly that the problem is in the hot tub itself, so you don’t pay for electrical work you don’t need.

Why did part of my house lose power when no breaker tripped?

This is often a loose or failed connection, sometimes hidden inside a junction box in a wall, attic or crawlspace. It can cause arcing, so call an electrician instead of waiting for it to come back on.

Odenton Electrical FAQs

Do you serve Gambrills, Crofton, and Fort Meade, too?

Yes. Along with Odenton, we serve the nearby communities of Gambrills, Crofton, and Fort Meade. Our office is just up the road in Millersville, so we can usually get to you quickly. Call 443-747-7909 or request service online to schedule electrical work at your home or business.

What smoke alarms does Maryland require in my home?

Maryland law requires battery-only smoke alarms to be sealed units with a 10-year long-life battery. Many homes also have hardwired alarms with battery backup. We install hardwired, interconnected smoke detectors, so when one alarm sounds, they all sound, giving your family the earliest possible warning.

Can you install a ceiling fan where I only have a light fixture?

Usually, yes. A ceiling fan is heavier than a light and moves while it runs, so it needs a fan-rated electrical box. We check the box and wiring in your ceiling, replace the box if needed, and can add a wall control so you can run the fan and light separately.

Do I need whole-home surge protection?

Power surges from lightning or the utility can damage appliances, HVAC equipment, and electronics. Plug-in surge strips only protect what’s plugged into them. A whole-home surge protector is installed at your electrical panel and protects every circuit in the house. It’s a small investment compared to replacing a damaged appliance.

Can you install smart switches and dimmers?

Yes. We install smart switches and dimmers that let you control your lights from your phone, set schedules, and use voice assistants. We confirm your wiring is compatible, install and connect each switch, help you set up the app, and test everything before we leave.

Evaluated a home in Odenton where excessive moisture and mirror fogging were causing issues in the master bathroom. We upgraded the ventilation system by removing an underperforming, noisy builder-grade unit and installing a high-CFM, whisper-quiet fan vented straight out the roof cap. We integrated a digital humidity-sensing wall switch that automatically activates the fan whenever moisture levels elevate.

Arrived at a home in Odenton where the homeowner said a bedroom outlet had stopped working completely with no tripped breaker and no explanation. The GFCI outlets in the bathroom nearby all tested fine. Traced the circuit carefully and found the bedroom outlet had been wired with the line and load terminals reversed at the junction point, meaning it had technically never been correctly connected and had finally lost contact at the reversed connection. Corrected the wiring, verified polarity at every downstream outlet on the circuit, and tested all under load. Dead outlet is live and wired correctly now and the homeowner finally has power at the desk where they needed it most.

Responded to a home in Odenton where the homeowner said the kitchen and several outlets in the adjacent dining room lost power simultaneously without any explanation and nothing was tripped at the panel. Ran a full diagnostic and found a buried junction box in the crawlspace below the kitchen where a wire nut had failed and the connection had been arcing intermittently until it finally separated completely. The connection had not been accessible because it was inside a box covered under several years of insulation. Opened the box, corrected the junction with a proper connector and secured enclosure, tested all affected circuits under load, and confirmed stable power throughout the kitchen and dining area.

Arrived at a home near the Piney Orchard community in Odenton where the homeowner had just installed a new video doorbell and a smart lock on the front door and neither of them was holding a charge or maintaining a consistent network connection. Found the existing doorbell transformer was a 1990s-era unit that could not supply the consistent wattage the modern smart devices required. Replaced it with a higher-output transformer rated for smart doorbell systems, verified wiring continuity from the transformer to both devices, and tested network connectivity, motion detection, and remote lock operation from the homeowner's phone. Worked perfectly from the moment the new transformer was in. Thirty-year-old doorbell wiring and modern smart devices are not a great combination.

Today's visit was for a new construction pool. We ran the conduit from the outside panel to the location of the new pool panel. We had to run conduit of the side of the house until we hit dirt and trenched from there. We brought it as low as possible for aesthetic purposes. The feeder was 50A which was more than enough to accommodate the new equipment. The run was approximately 95 feet. We installed 1 pump, 1 gas heater, 3 lights, and 1 service receptacle. Work is complete.

Today’s visit was for troubleshooting a dedicated hot tub circuit. The circuit was ran from the panel to a spa disconnect on the exterior of the house and then from the spa disconnect to the hot tub. The entire circuit was enclosed in PVC conduit protecting it from damage as required by the NEC Code. There is no way rodents or any kind of animal could have damaged the wiring. If that was the case, the breaker would trip immediately and it did not. I tested the wiring at each location. Once the hot tub was turned on, it would work for about five minutes and then stop while the electrical was still on. The lights continued to work, but the pump cut off. In my professional opinion, this is a fault in the hot tub. Not the electrical installation.

Today’s visit was for a couple of different reasons. Wiring in switch bank needed to be corrected. Customer also tried to replace a switch on their own and caused a spark. We installed (4) three-way switches and (1) four-way switch. While doing the assessment, we also saw that the panel had multiwire branch circuits on single pole breakers. We recommended to install Two pole breakers on the multi wire branch circuits to bring the panel up to code. We also recommended surge protection to protect all appliances and technology in the home. Customer proceeded with all of the work.
