Electrical Panel Upgrades for Older Glen Burnie Homes

Many Glen Burnie homes still run on their original electrical panels. Watch for these warning signs:

  • A breaker that buzzes, crackles or sizzles
  • Breakers that trip again and again
  • No main shut-off breaker
  • No open spaces to add a new circuit

On a recent Glen Burnie visit, a homeowner called us about a main breaker making a sizzling sound. The panel was about 50 years old, so we quoted a full upgrade to 200-amp service.

On every panel upgrade, we pull the permit, schedule the inspections, and coordinate the shut-off and reconnect with BGE. A full service upgrade can also include an exterior disconnect and whole-home surge protection.

EV Charger Installation in Glen Burnie

A standard 120-volt outlet often can’t keep up with an electric vehicle. One Glen Burnie Heights homeowner had been charging that way for six months and still wasn’t getting a full charge overnight. We cleared space in the panel, ran a dedicated 240-volt circuit to the garage, and installed a Level 2 charging station.

Our EV charger installation includes:

  • A load check to make sure your panel can handle the charger
  • A dedicated 240-volt circuit to your garage or driveway
  • The permit and inspection
  • Testing and a quick walkthrough of your charger app

Electrical Troubleshooting and Repairs

Troubleshooting is one of the most common requests for electrical services in Glen Burnie, MD. Recent repairs in town include:

  • A living room outlet with melted wires that shut down power to the whole circuit
  • A melted, sparking GFCI outlet powering a front-yard fountain
  • Garage and outdoor GFCI outlets that kept tripping because moisture got into an outdoor box
  • A bathroom exhaust fan with a failing motor and a loose wiring splice

If an outlet feels warm, looks discolored or smells like burning plastic, stop using it and call us. We offer emergency electrical service 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Dedicated Circuits for Appliances and Equipment

Large appliances need their own circuit. When they share one, breakers trip and wiring can overheat. In Glen Burnie, we’ve recently:

  • Ran a dedicated 20-amp circuit for a whole-home water softener
  • Ran a dedicated circuit for a space heater, protected by an arc-fault breaker as code requires
  • Quoted a new 240-volt circuit for an electric range

Lighting, Ceiling Fans and Smart Home Upgrades

We handle lighting projects of every size, from a 35-pound crystal chandelier on a 12-foot ceiling to replacing four ceiling fans in one visit. We also install:

  • Recessed lighting
  • LED floodlights and pathway lights with motion sensors
  • Smart home upgrades like smart switches, smart thermostats and Wi-Fi lighting controls
  • Doorbell transformers for new video doorbells

Safety Inspections and Pre-Sale Repairs

Selling your Glen Burnie home? We can fix outlets, switches and other electrical items before the buyer’s inspection, so your closing stays on track.

Our safety inspections check your panel, GFCI protection, wiring connections and lights. Some area homes built in the late 1960s and early 1970s have aluminum branch wiring, which can overheat at the connections. Our aluminum wiring restoration service makes those connections safe.

Glen Burnie Electrical FAQs

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Glen Burnie?

Most bigger jobs do, like panel upgrades, new circuits and EV chargers. Glen Burnie is in Anne Arundel County, so permits go through the county. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection for you.

How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in Glen Burnie?

It depends on your home’s current panel, the amperage you need, and whether the service cable or meter base needs work. We look at your panel in person and give you a clear quote before any work begins.

Do you offer emergency electrical service in Glen Burnie?

Yes. Emergency service is available 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. If you have sparking, a burning smell or a sudden loss of power, call 443-747-7909.

Can you install a Level 2 EV charger in my Glen Burnie garage?

Yes. We check your panel’s capacity, run a dedicated 240-volt circuit, handle the permit and test the charger before we leave.

Why is my outlet warm or discolored?

A warm or discolored outlet usually means a loose or overheating connection. Stop using it and call an electrician. We’ve repaired several melted outlets in Glen Burnie homes, and catching it early prevents bigger damage.

Responded to an urgent call in Glen Burnie regarding an older ionization alarm system that was continuously chirping and failing to hold battery backup power. We executed a full smoke detector upgrade, replacing all outdated units with hardwired 120V First Alert dual-sensor smoke and carbon monoxide detectors featuring 10-year sealed lithium backup batteries. All detectors were interconnected so an activation in one room instantly triggers alarms across the entire residence.

Arrived at a home in Glen Burnie where the homeowner had recently had a whole-home water softener installed and the plumber had told them a dedicated circuit was needed before the softener could be properly commissioned. The unit had been sitting powered off a shared outlet, which was not adequate for the regeneration demand. Ran a dedicated 20-amp circuit from the panel to the utility room, installed a properly rated outlet at the softener location, and tested the circuit under load through a manual regeneration cycle. Softener is now commissioned and running on its own dedicated circuit the way it was supposed to be from the start.

Glen Burnie, MD - Today’s visit was for looking at a main breaker that was making a sizzling sound. The panel itself is about 50 years old and really should be replaced. Gave the customer a quote. This is for upgrading the main electrical service to 200A. We would install an exterior disconnect, surge protector, new 40 space panel, new breakers, new cable, pull required permit, schedule inspections, and coordinate with BGE.

Arrived at a home in the Glen Burnie Heights area of Glen Burnie where the homeowner had been charging an electric vehicle on a Level 1 outlet in the garage since buying the car six months ago and was frustrated that an overnight charge still was not getting them to full. The existing 120-volt circuit was not adequate for even a basic Level 2 setup and the panel needed a slot cleared before the 240-volt circuit could be added. Cleared the panel, ran a dedicated 240-volt circuit through conduit to the garage wall, installed a properly rated Level 2 charging station, and confirmed full charging output before walking the homeowner through the app. Going from Level 1 to Level 2 changes how the car fits into the daily routine.

Today’s visit was for diagnosing an issue with the pool pump. I bypassed the mechanical timer and the issue still happened making it clear that the pool pump itself is what needs to be replaced. I would also suggest replacing the mechanical timer as well. It is very rusted. The entire pool system is antiquated and should be updated as well but the pump and the timer should be replaced at minimum. Customer will let me know what he decides.
